Mentions vs. Recommendations: The AI Visibility Number That Actually Matters
Being named by AI puts you on a list. Being recommended puts you on the shortlist. Here's why recommendations are the number to manage by — and what our own test across Gemini, ChatGPT and Perplexity showed.

Most AI visibility reports stop at one number: how often your brand gets mentioned. It's easy to measure, and it feels like progress. But it's also the wrong number to manage.
A mention isn't a recommendation
When a buyer asks Gemini, ChatGPT, or Perplexity "Who should I hire for this?", the answer usually names several companies. Being named is a mention. Being the one the answer tells the buyer to choose is a recommendation.
Those two outcomes are very different. A mention puts you on a list. A recommendation puts you on the shortlist.
What our own test showed
We ran ClearVisibility through our own monitoring: 8 buyer questions across Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity — 24 AI answers in all.
- Mention rate: 25% of questions named us at least once.
- Recommendations: 2 answers out of 24 actually recommended us.
- Citations: 13% of questions linked to our site as a source.
If we only tracked mentions, we'd call that a decent start. Viewed through recommendations, it's clear how much work remains. That gap is exactly what the six readiness capabilities and the CLEAR Framework™ exist to close.
Why AI recommends some brands and not others
In our experience, the brands that get recommended make it easy for AI to:
- Understand what they do and who they serve.
- Verify claims with dated proof, named clients, and consistent facts.
- Compare them fairly, with clear pricing, scope, and fit.
Brands that are only mentioned tend to be known but unproven. The AI knows they exist, but it can't justify recommending them to a buyer.
What to measure instead
For every buyer question you care about, track three outcomes per engine:
- Recommended: the answer tells the buyer to choose you.
- Considered: you're named as a reasonable option.
- Mentioned: you appear, but without endorsement.
Then watch recommendations month over month. That number tracks pipeline.
The bottom line
Mentions tell you AI knows your name. Recommendations tell you AI trusts you enough to send a buyer your way. If you want to see where you stand, take the free readiness assessment or book a call.
